Conservatives looking to force wider consultation before bin collection changes made

Councillor Eddie Reeves believes potential changes have been poorly communicated to members of the public
Conservative Councillors at Cherwell District Council will next week try to force the authority’s Liberal Democrat administration to undertake a “wider public consultation” before considering moving forward with plans for three-weekly general waste collections.
The move first came to light as the council put together its budget for the new financial year. Whilst three-weekly collections do not form part of plans for the next twelve months, savings are budgeted from April 2027 indicating the change will happen then.
Conservative group leader Councillor Eddie Reeves has put forward a motion for next week’s full council meeting which berates the change for being “poorly communicated to members of the public”.
He urges the council to “undertake a wider public consultation exercise than first envisaged, including but not limited to writing to all Town and Parish clerks with a view to more fully explaining the environment and commercial benefits of the policy to residents”.
The motion concludes compelling the council’s leaders to listen to and take on board residents’ views in relation to any changes to refuse collections.
The motion will be debated next Monday evening.
