Drivers could be fined if they contravene the buses only lane

Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras could be coming to parts of Tramway and Station Approach in Banbury, with drivers who use the new link between the two roads fined for doing so.

Oxfordshire County Council has begun a consultation on a proposal to instal cameras on existing street lamp columns in order to help ensure their new bus lane is only used by local buses and bicycles.    Exemptions would be granted for emergency service vehicles, taxis and Network Rail’s “Rapid Response” unit vehicles.

The plans show nine cameras being installed close to the new roundabout.

The council says the proposal is being put forward “in order to help manage the safe and effective use of the bus gate, ensuring access is maintained for those exempted vehicles, and active enforcement of the signed restriction is able to take place”.

The public are being asked to comment on the idea with the consultation running until April 24.
