MP experiences daily challenges for those with sight loss

Banbury’s MP has gained a first-hand insight into the daily challenges faced by people with sight loss in the Banbury area.
Sean Woodcock joined representatives from the Royal National Institute of Blind People for a guided walk through Banbury town centre. He was provided with “simulation specs” – specialised eyewear which is designed to mirror common eye conditions such as cataracts, tunnel vision and glaucoma.
Under the guidance of the RNIB experts he then navigated a 30-minute route along Banbury High Street, experiencing how street layouts, obstacles, and lack of accessible infrastructure impact on the independence of blind and partially sighted people.
Reflecting on the experience Mr Woodcock said: “It was remarkable how different the experience of walking down Banbury High Street was whilst wearing the simulation glasses, as even the most familiar of areas became difficult to navigate.
“It is essential that our local infrastructure is inclusive, and the conversations I had with those from the RNIB about the importance of accessible streets and vision rehabilitation services were very insightful. I am committed to ensuring that Banbury is a welcoming and accessible place for everyone.”
