Sainsbury’s is seeking approval to install a large rooftop solar energy system at its Banbury store as part of efforts to cut carbon emissions.

A planning application has been submitted to Cherwell District Council for the installation of 678 panels on the roof of the supermarket on Oxford Road.

The proposed development would see solar panels fitted to the flat roof of the store.   The system is expected to save over 54 tonnes of carbon emissions each year, according to the planning statement.

Documents submitted with the application state that the panels have been designed to minimise visual impact.   Due to the height of the building and surrounding structures, the installation is not expected to be prominent from street level or negatively affect the character of the area.

The new system would replace an existing, smaller installation.
