Hundreds of jobs under threat as distribution centre closure plans announced

The company’s other site in Derby would be scaled up to take on work currently completed in Banbury
Hundreds of jobs could be lost if a proposal to close a Banbury distribution centre goes ahead.
Staff at HelloFresh on Chalker Way were told of the company’s plans on Wednesday.
A consultation will now begin with the company anticipating the site remaining operational until the end of October.
HelloFresh is a German multi-national company which creates and delivers meal kits to subscribers. It has two sites in the UK. The Banbury centre, known as the Granary, occupies a 215,000 square foot unit close to the M40. A larger 450,000 square foot site is based in Derby. The company believes it is best able to meet its UK customers’ needs by scaling up and operating solely from there, where it can produce nearly twice as many recipes as at the Banbury site.
HelloFresh says it will try to minimise or avoid job losses, including identifying potential opportunities for redeployment within the business.
A HelloFresh UK spokesperson said: “We have made the difficult decision to propose to close our Banbury site, subject to consultation. After an extensive review of our operations, our initial proposal is that consolidating to a single, more technologically advanced site is the right course of action to ensure the long-term viability and efficiency of the business.
“Our Windmill site is equipped with technology that enables greater operational complexity and delivers an expanding menu with flexible ingredient options. These capabilities require a single, centralised footprint to operate efficiently.
“We will now enter a period of consultation with our employees on our proposal and to consider all reasonable alternatives. Our focus will be on supporting affected employees, including exploring redeployment opportunities.
“The proposed closure of the facility is not a reflection of the local teams’ performance and we are grateful for all their hard work and commitment to date.”
