Advice for owners after dog attacks goose at St James Lake

Brackley Town Council reminds dog owners to take responsibility for their pets
Dog owners in Brackley are being asked to take responsibility for their pets in the town after a dog attacked one of the geese at St James Lake last weekend.
The bird was not badly harmed, but the Town Council has chosen to issue tips to make sure that everyone can enjoy their parks and public open spaces safely.
The Council says that it may be appropriate for dogs to be off their lead in areas with wider space, but they should always be kept under control and able to respond quickly when recalled.
Owners are reminded that some people are intimidated or frightened by dogs. They’re reminded to keep their pet at heel, or on a lead, near wildlife. Also it’s not appropriate to exercise dogs in ponds or lakes as this may cause distress to young birds and other wildlife, as well as causing damage to the banks and fish stock.
The goose affected by the incident at the weekend was released back into the lake shortly after the attack.

I was shocked but not surprised by the news. I have witnessed dogs chasing the geese several times in the past and have spoken to the owners who either shrugged their shoulders or verbally abuse me .
NO dogs should be off lead at this critical time with so many young birds about and NO dogs should be exercised off lead if they have the potential to chase the livestock. Sadly it this behaviour is Dow to very poor dog management and ownership.
