Grenade found in Banbury canal
16/05/2022
A controlled explosion could be heard as disposal experts dealt with the explosive
A Banbury man using a magnet to trawl the Oxford canal pulled out more than he bargained for on Sunday afternoon. Shane Phillips managed to fish out a grenade!
Mr Phillips was using the magnet to retrieve metallic objects from the bottom of the canal close to Bridge Street and Station Approach. He successfully pulled out a number of items and held them up so those watching his live stream could see what he had found.
When the grenade appeared out of the water attached to the magnet Mr Phillips called to a friend to verify what he thought he had found. The live stream then quickly ended as a call was made to the emergency services.
The police arrived at the scene at around 6.15pm followed by army disposal experts at 8.40pm. They undertook a controlled explosion which was heard around parts of town.
Mr Phillips described the moment he found the grenade as “very frightening”.
