Thousands yet to claim their £150 energy rebate

Cherwell has now paid, or sent invitations to claim the money, to all those who are eligible for the rebate

Several thousand households in the Cherwell District are yet to claim their £150 energy rebate.   The eligible properties have all been written to, inviting them to claim the cash, but they haven’t yet done so.

The rebate is one of the government schemes which were introduced to support households suffering from the rising cost of energy.  The payment is made as a one-off Council Tax rebate and is available to all households in bands A to D.

By the start of June more than £5.5m had been paid out to over 37,000 eligible Council Tax payers.   Of those who don’t pay by direct debit 3,000 households had received their money.

All of those in the District who are signed-up to pay their Council Tax by direct debit have already received their rebate.   This was paid directly into their bank accounts.   Of the remaining households Cherwell has written to 12,000 people inviting them to claim the cash.

Each letter contains a special unique passcode which gives the Council Tax payer access to their own online form to complete so Cherwell has the relevant information to make the payment.

Councillor Adam Nell, Portfolio Holder for Finance, said: “For anyone having difficulties with the application process, an informative step by step guide is available on the council’s website and I do encourage people to seek that out. We expect most of these households will get their £150 during June and July once they apply – we’re keen for no-one to miss out.”

Cherwell says it has now successfully paid, or invited applications from, all those who are eligible for the rebate. 

The council also has a limited pot of funding for a discretionary fund for households in need, who are not eligible for the main council tax rebate scheme.
