Hard work pays off for enterprising nine-year-old who wanted to raise money to say thank you to the NHS
A Banbury youngster has smashed his own fund-raising target running a one-day raffle for the Horton General Hospital Charity. Nine-year-old Freddie Morgan-Smart raised £550 after spending last Saturday selling tickets at Banbury Market.
Freddie’s mum Clare Smart told Banbury FM, “Freddie loved every minute of it. He was totally overwhelmed by how kind everyone was”.
Freddie decided to run a raffle after previously raising money for the NHS by baking and selling cakes. A number of generous local companies donated prizes. Local printers were unable to help with printed raffle tickets due to the coronavirus pandemic, but undaunted, Freddie pushed ahead using standard cloakroom tickets, meaning he had to complete his raffle all in one day.
Supported by his family, the Grange School pupil took a stall at Banbury Market on Saturday and sold tickets to those passing his stall. As the market wound down on Saturday afternoon Freddie drew the winning tickets for each of the prizes.
The final total raised on the day achieved an impressive £538 which increased to £550 with donations. Freddie will now present this money to the Horton General Hospital Charity.
Back at home Freddie celebrated a successful day with an ice-cold glass of water. He said, “Thank you to everyone who supported me on Saturday. You’re stars”!
