Following a hugely successful year in 2024, Banbury Choral Society is opening its 2025 season with a performance of Mozart’s Requiem on Saturday 12th April. This is one of Mozart’s most celebrated and mysterious works, featured in the Oscar-winning film ‘Amadeus’.
The choir will also be performing Schubert’s Mass in G Major, written by the composer at the age of just eighteen. This and Mozart Requiem will be played by a string orchestra and organ conducted by Jonathan Kingston. The choir will be accompanied by soloists performing in the glorious acoustics of the Grade I listed building, St Mary’s Church Banbury.
Jonathan Kingston began his role as musical accompanist with Banbury Choral Society in 2021. In September 2023 he became musical director, taking over the role from Julian Harris who, in 12 years, raised the standard of singing to a higher level of musicianship.
Jonathan Kingston said: “I am delighted to report that over the last couple of years the membership of Banbury Choral Society has blossomed, creating one of the finest amateur choirs in the region. It’s a huge privilege to take over the directorship of such a respected choir from Julian, who continues as our accompanist.
“I’d urge anyone who enjoys classical or choral music to buy their tickets now, as this concert is sure to be very popular. The standard of performances just gets better and better at Banbury Choral Society and we are lucky to be accompanied by some of the finest professional musicians in the UK.”
Banbury Choral Society, founded in 1942, is one of the largest choirs in North Oxfordshire with more than 100 members. Videos from past concerts are available to listen to on the BCS YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@banburychoralsociety3357
Tickets available online and on the door are £18 adults and £5 under 16s.
