Brackley Players present the dark comedy Better Off Dead by Alan Ayckbourn, from Wednesday 30 October to Friday 1 November 2024, at Brackley Baptist Church.
The play sees writer Algy Waterbridge grumpily trying to finish his 33rd crime novel. Unfortunately, his wife is becoming more forgetful, and his PA frequently oversteps the mark. When a confusion over a newspaper article creates further problems, soon the line between reality and fiction becomes blurred, with surprising consequences.
The cast features Jim Howson as the irascible author Algy Waterbridge and Lisa Saffrey as his wife Jessica, with Amanda Howson as Algy’s long suffering PA Thelma. Scottl Saffrey plays the hapless journalist Gus Crewes and Simon Young plays publisher Jason Ratcliffe, with Josh Ryan as DSI Tommy Middlebrass and Fran Hollyoake as DS Gemma Price. The play is co-directed by Dave Toman and Alice Adams.
Sir Alan Ayckbourn is one of the country’s major living playwrights, having written 90 full-length plays, many of which have been produced in the West End and around the world, as well as becoming favourites in the world of amateur drama. Ayckbourn plays that Brackley Players have previously performed include Season’s Greetings, Communicating Doors and Neighbourhood Watch.
Brackley Players will present Better Off Dead on three nights, from Wednesday 30 October to Friday 1 November 2024 starting at 7.30pm, at Brackley Baptist Church, on Waynflete Close in Brackley (NN13 6AE). Tickets are £12, with concessions priced at £10, and they can be bought in person from the Old Hall Bookshop in Brackley town centre or online at www.brackleyplayers.org.uk. Tea and coffee will be available, and audiences are welcome to bring along their own cold food and drinks.
