£1.65m needed to fix leaky shopping centre roof

Councillors will decide if the money should be released tonight

£1.65m of tax payers money is needed to repair the roof at the Castle Quay Shopping Centre.

The expenditure is recommended to be approved by Cherwell District Council’s Executive Committee this evening.

A report to them highlights that the Council owned centre has a number of areas where the roof fabric, due to age, is deteriorating and leaks are becoming more frequent.

It notes: “Customer and tenant complaints are numerous, with wet areas on the tiled floors of the mall presenting potential slip/trips and fall hazards which are having to be managed by the centre management team to ensure public safety.

“Tenants have made representations, seeking damages and impacting letting of vacant and void units, where the council are fully liable for all costs incurred.”

If approved the works should extend the life of the roof by 10 years.

It could also include re-enforcement panels, ducting and routes which may be utilised as part of ongoing green energy advances, supporting the council’s climate strategies.
