Banbury Town Council has cancelled a number of key 2020 events

A number of popular annual Banbury events have fallen victim to the restrictions now in force due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Banbury Town Council has announced that “A Taste of Spring”, planned for 19th April and the Outdoor Cinema, scheduled for 8th May, will no longer be taking place.   In addition the Tea Dance planned for 10th May as part of the town’s VE Day 75th anniversary celebrations has been pulled.

In a statement the Town Council said, “Cancelling events isn’t something the council takes lightly or wants to do but we are in unknown territory with this virus.

“We only have to look around the world to see how serious the outbreak could become and we must cut all risks to a minimum, public and participant safety is paramount. Any gathering at which people mingle closely together is a risk and the council has to act responsibly.

“We have to heed warnings that the virus situation will get worse over the coming weeks and months – and it seems inevitable that large gatherings will be banned. It was felt far better for everyone that the decision to cancel is taken earlier rather than later”.

It is hoped it might be possible to reschedule the Outdoor Cinema and VE Day Tea Dance later in the year.
