Invitation to learn more about how technology work with hands on practical learning

A Banbury group is offering local people the chance to learn more about the modern technology they have in their house.   Thanks to a £2,000 grant from the National Lottery, members of the Banbury Shed will be running Connect & Learn – a chance to find out about how the electronic gadgets in our homes works.

People joining in will be provided with a small electronic device which they will be able to use during the sessions so they can get hands on experience.  No previous knowledge is required, although optional extensions will be offered for those that want to go further.

Jim Smith from Banbury Shed said: “People want to know how their smart fridge works, or their cooker that talks to them, or Amazon Alexa – all those things people hear about but very rarely do they get to understand them.   Our idea was that we get one of these things, we give the basics of how it works and let people have a go themselves.”

Funding from the national lottery has been used to purchase the kits which will be delivered to people joining the sessions.  As there are a limited number available anyone interested is advised to sign-up as soon as they can.

Mr Smith added: “The gadget people will be given is about the size of a matchbox.   It has a small touch screen on the front.   It’s incredible what you can get in a small box like this.   Its certainly got more computing power than the space rocket that went to the moon when we first sent men there!”

The main sessions will be held on Sunday afternoons during March, but Banbury Shed have arranged two introduction opportunities, this Saturday (February 13) at 9:30am or Saturday February 20 at 9:00am.

Connect & Learn is aimed at adults.   Other family members are welcome to attend but need to be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.

Anyone interested can book the session this Saturday here, or on Saturday 20, 2021 here.
