Illegal scrap metal collector caught and fined
19/02/2021
Collectors have their van taken away and receive COVID fines
A number of agencies worked together yesterday to deal with an illegal scrap metal collector in our area. After being caught operating without the correct documentation the collector’s van and contents were impounded.
Officers from Cherwell District Council’s Community Safety worked with Thames Valley Police’s Roads Policing teams and Community Support Officers, and others, to catch up with the collector’s van. It had been seen in Banbury and the surrounding villages but was eventually pulled over in Bicester on Thursday afternoon.
The people in the van were issued with a £200 fixed penalty notice for breaching COVID regulations. With their van having been impounded they had to use the train for their trip home.
A social media post by Cherwell’s Community Warden said: “We have warned time and time again.. If you come into our district to collect scrap metal…make sure you have the correct permits insurance and paperwork.”
