Matalan closing permanently
26/02/2021
The store behind the Cherwell Centre on George Street will not reopen after lockdown
Banbury’s Matalan store will not be reopening after lockdown restrictions are lifted. A spokesperson for the company has confirmed to Banbury FM that the store behind the Cherwell Centre on George Street is closing down.
The company says that the Banbury store has been under review for a significant period of time and this closure is not related to the pandemic. The spokesperson said they were unable to comment on the future of those who worked at the store as a consultation process is currently ongoing.
Earlier today the Matalan Banbury Facebook page was still active, but the Banbury store has been removed from the company’s list of branches on the Matalan website.
The loss of Matalan from Banbury is the latest is a number of high profile losses from the town’s retail offering. The closure of the Debenham’s store was announced earlier this year when the brand was sold as an online only entity.

Matalan has always been my ‘go to’ shop for basics. VERY sorry to learn it has gone.
