Hip Fracture Team has been named one of the top hospitals in the country for the eighth year

You’re in the best hands if you need hip fracture treatment at the Horton – and that’s official.   The hospital’s Hip Fracture Team has been named one of the top hospitals in the country for the eighth year running.

The hospital met all of its best practice criteria for nearly 95 percent of patients putting the team at the top of national tables.   The average across the country is 58 percent.

This was the second time in the last five years Horton has finished top of the league table.

The latest figures were published in the annual National Hip Fracture Audit, which compared the performance of 174 trauma units in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland in 2019.

The national report shows that over 90 percent of patients admitted to the Horton General Hospital underwent surgery either on the same day, or the day after, significantly surpassing the national average of 69 percent.

The results showed that all patients at the Horton received a prompt assessment by an orthogeriatrician, 96.1 percent received prompt surgery and none of the patients developed pressure ulcers during their hospital stay.

Sam Anand, Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Horton said, said: “We always look forward to this annual review of our hip fracture services at the Horton. These results go to show the expertise and commitment of all our team, which is especially rewarding as our patient numbers have gone up.  We’re so happy to be acknowledged for our continuation of excellent care.

“Hip fractures are very common and they’re often suffered by elderly or frail people who need rapid care. We’re really pleased we can help them in such an efficient and effective way.”

Dr Jon Westbrook, Divisional Director of Neurosciences, Orthopaedics, Trauma, Specialist Surgery, Children’s and Neonates, said: “Once more, we’re very proud of the work our Trauma team at the Horton undertakes for these patients, who benefit from such rapid and expert surgery. These results are testament to the commitment, care and compassion shown by the entire team.”
