Youngsters find their voice through performance this weekend
04/06/2021
After weeks of preparation young people will be the stars of a festival in an unusual location
The car park under the new Lidl store in the centre of Banbury is the innovative setting for a festival which is taking place tomorrow (June 5).
The Cherwell Theatre Company’s ‘Tell Your Story Festival’ project began over the Easter weekend with youngsters invited to join in so they could get their voices heard and their skills seen.
Tomorrow their hard work from the last few weeks will be showcased alongside a number of other performers. There’s also a chance to join in with workshops through the day.
Tristan Jackson-Pate, the artistic director for the Cherwell Theatre Company, said: “We exist to bring young people together with professional artists of all disciplines to make exciting theatre often in extraordinary places.
“The Tell Your Story Festival brings together months of work with schools and community organisations across the town, such as the Let’s Play Project, Banbury Young Homelessness Project, the Hill Community Centre and Banbury Mosque.”
Theatre makers, stop motion animators, film makers, musicians, movement directors and puppeteers have all been used to introduce the young people to different methods of storytelling. Their work will be showcased this weekend.
Alongside this the festival will include poetry, comedy, music and drama from professional performers. Free workshops give youngsters the chance to learn about puppet making, illustrating, creating poetry, drama and comedy improvisation.
The Cherwell Theatre Company is used to very different performance areas, having previously used the bunker under Banbury Town Hall and Broughton Castle. They have plans in hand for a future event at the Woodgreen Leisure Centre outdoor pool.
Saturday’s Festival runs across two sessions, one in the afternoon and another in the evening. Both are free to attend. Very limited tickets remain available here.
