25 fraud cases proven by Cherwell’s counter-fraud service
28/07/2022
£49,000 was recovered by the service during the last financial year
During the last financial year 91 cases of actual, suspected or alleged fraud or whistleblowing were investigated by the Counter-Fraud service at Cherwell District Council.
Of these, 25 cases were proven and appropriate action taken. A further one was partially proven. Ten cases are still open.
The remaining 55 cases saw no further action taken after being investigated.
The team’s worked resulted in £49,000 being recovered and a future loss of an estimated £11,000 prevented.
Around half the cases were where it had been suggested people were incorrectly claiming the Council Tax single person discount. Sub-letting of a rented property accounted for a further 7 cases.
The work reflects the first full year for the Counter-Fraud service, which operates across both Oxfordshire County Council and Cherwell District Council.
