The county council says the proposals come as part of a United States Visiting Forces road safety initiative

Oxfordshire County Council is proposing reducing the speed limit to 40mph on both Hennef Way in Banbury and the A4260 Oxford Road between Adderbury and Bodicote.   The Council says the idea comes as part of a United States Visiting Forces road safety initiative.

A consultation on the proposals closes this Friday.

With the Department for Transport, the County Council has already agreed work to enhance highway safety near to RAF Barford St John.   This came following the tragic collision outside RAF Croughton, where United States citizen Anne Sacoolas drove on the wrong side of the road and collided with a motorbike, fatally injuring Harry Dunn.

Measures being implemented at RAF Barford St John include new road markings, traffic signs, traffic calming and enhanced maintenance, such as carriageway surfacing.  The government provided £1.26m for this work.

But the proposals for Hennef Way are almost 5-miles away from RAF Barford St John and 7-and-a-half miles from RAF Croughton.

In April this year, at the time of accepting the government funding for work at RAF Barford St John a number of other schemes were approved.

Amongst them Council officers are proposing reducing the existing 50mph limit on Hennef Way to 40mph between the A423 Southam Road roundabout and the Ermont Way / Wildmere Road roundabout.

In the consultation overview they say: “The proposals are being put forward to help improve road safety in the vicinity by reducing traffic speeds and therefore the risk of collisions at the various junctions leading onto / from Hennef Way.”

The work, including carriageway maintenance, will cost around £94,000.

Between Adderbury and Bodicote it is proposed that the existing national speed limit of 60mph be reduced to 40mph.   The cost of this work will be £7,562.

The document concludes: “The County Council continues its responsibility to consider the provision of convenient and safe movement of motor vehicles and other traffic, and the proposed measures are aimed at ensuring that danger is minimised whilst facilitating the effective and safe passage of traffic.”

The public have until Friday to comment on the two separate consultations for Hennef Way and the A4260 between Adderbury and Bodicote.

Can’t be bothered to fix the deadly potholes etc which would massively improve safety without any alterations to speed limits so instead reduce the limit to excuse the bother to ever fix the third world road surface!
