Abusive high street e-scooter rider the latest to have his e-scooter seized
19/09/2024
Across the Thames Valley Police seized 118 e-scooters and e-bikes in the last three months
A 23-year-old man has had his e-scooter seized and he’s been reported for having no licence or insurance after he rode past police in Banbury High Street and shouted abuse and made a rude gesture at them.
Whilst some areas have schemes in place that allow the riding of hired E-scooters, no scheme is running in Banbury so riding them anywhere apart from private land with the landowner’s permission is illegal.
The latest seizure in Banbury comes as Thames Valley Police announced they have seized 118 e-scooters and e-bikes across their area in the last three months.
Over the past couple of weeks two serious incidents have involved e-scooters in Bracknell and Milton Keynes. In one a teenage boy sustained injuries after he swerved on his e-scooter and collided with a lamppost whilst trying to avoid an opening parked van door.
A second incident saw a woman in her sixties sustain serious head injuries after being struck by someone riding an e-scooter.
Seizing vehicles is part of the force’s response, with ongoing education work in schools and with parents another.
Community Policing Command Inspector Mike Darrah said: “Dangerous, illegal, and inappropriate use of both e-scooters and e-bikes poses serious risks in the community and is something the public continue to rightly raise to us as a concern.
“These stats highlight the progress we are making in dealing with this issue but as the incidents of the past couple of weeks in different areas of the force show, there is still a lot more work to do.
“Through both seizing vehicles that are being used illegally and continuing to educate people on the laws, preventing offences, our communities will be safer.”
