Adderbury field won’t be used for a dementia facility but houses instead

Councillors allowed the new homes accepting the principle of development had been agreed

A plot of land in Adderbury is set to have 18 homes built on it, despite the land initially being given planning permission for a specialist nursing facility associated with dementia care and neurological rehabilitation.   The field lies behind the Care Home on the Oxford Road in the village.

Permission was last night granted for new housing after Councillors accepted the principal of development on the land had already been established.

However the developer, Malvern Homes, won’t be building any affordable homes as they say this isn’t viable.   The report to Councillors also noted that the applicant had not offered any community benefit to Adderbury to mitigate the impact of development.

The request to build a specialist nursing facility had received local support, with Adderbury Parish Council backing the plan.   But in December 2020 the original owners sold the land to Malvern Homes, who say they purchased the field with the intention of carrying out a residential development.

Councillor Douglas Webb supported the application but wasn’t happy about the lack of contributions to the local infrastructure.

He said: “It’s a shame that the dementia unit isn’t going ahead as we all felt that was needed …

“Its going to happen because they have permission for development on the site and it makes sense what’s being put forward, but I would have liked to have seen something go towards the road as it’s a main road and that to me is vital.

“It’s a main artery that gets blocked up quite often.”

Councillors passed the development with 8 voting in favour, 2 against and 4 abstaining.
