Homeowners in Adderbury have been doing their best to protect their properties as the Sor Brook burst its banks following Monday’s torrential downpour.

Flood waters are stretched across the Lucy Plackett Playing Field and have entered properties on Dog Close.   One local resident told Banbury FM he had never seen flooding as bad as this in the village.

Volunteers manned a road closure on the main road through the village – the appropriately named Water Lane – as flood water made the road impassable.   One driver attempted to get through and became stranded half way.

One local business owner told Banbury FM he had moved property in his workshop off the floor last night but water had entered parts of his premises.

There were also fears for an electricity sub-station which was in the flood water.   Engineers were reportedly on their way to the scene.

The Environment Agency issued a red flood alert on Monday evening as levels rose on both the Sor Brook and Bloxham Brook.

In an update on Tuesday morning they said: “Property flooding is expected. River levels are high but now stable on the Sor Brook, and levels are high but falling on the Bloxham Brook following heavy rainfall. Therefore, flooding of property and roads is expected to continue today.

“Areas most at risk are properties close to the confluence in Adderbury, including those on Dog Close. The risk to properties close to the Bloxham Brook has reduced.

“The forecast is for a predominantly dry day today.   We expect river levels to remain high through this morning on the Sor Brook before starting to fall into this afternoon. Levels on the Bloxham Brook will continue to fall through today.”
