Hundreds pay tribute to service personnel on Armed Forces Day
26/06/2021
First event in town in over a year celebrates our armed forces
Banbury’s Armed Forces Day on Saturday saw hundreds of people pay tribute to service men and women past and present.
Members of the public joined the Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire Sir Tim Stevenson OBE, Banbury High Steward Sir Tony Baldry, MP Victoria Prentis, and town mayor Shaida Hussain at a collection of military stalls and vehicles in the Market Place.
Many stayed for the highlight of the day – a thrilling fly past of two second world war RAF fighter planes – a Spitfire and a Hawker Hurricane. The iconic aircraft made three low-level passes above the watching crowds.
Cllr Hussain said: “It was an honour to accompany the Lord Lieutenant and meet so many interesting people. We spoke to veterans, cadets and serving soldiers as we toured the stalls.”
The event was organised by Banbury Town Council and the local branch of the Royal British Legion.
Leader of the council and president of the Banbury RBL branch Kieron Mallon said: “There is something very special about the sight and sound of those aeroplanes. No matter how many times you see them, it’s always a wonderful experience.
“The event was low-key this year because of covid-19 restrictions. We worked with the Environmental Health Department and put on a show that was considered safe for visitors and participants.
He added: “Armed Forces Day is the climax of Armed Forces Week which enables us to show our support for the men and women who serve and have served in the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force.”
