The Skalectrics keyboard player has family roots in the war-torn country

Banbury band The Skalectrics have recorded two songs which they are hoping will raise money for Ukrainian humanitarian aid.   The father of the band’s keyboard player Nick Jasko came from Ukraine and he still has relatives in the country.

The Skalectrics have recorded their versions of two songs by The Specials: “Man at C&A” and “Lunatics”.

Both have been made available on Youtube and people are being asked to donate via a JustGiving page.  The band, which specialises in Ska music, has titled the project Ska Aid for Ukraine.

During the second world war Mr Jasko’s father was separated from his country and his family.  He never saw his parents again and only saw his surviving siblings over 50 years later.

Mr Jasko describes his father as “a proud Ukrainian”.   When he passed away three years ago at the age of 97 his ashes were taken back to Ukraine to be buried, as had been his wishes.

Today, as history appears to be repeating itself, the Skalectric’s musician sees many people, including his own cousins separated from their homeland and their loved ones due to the Russian invasion of the country.

Mr Jasko said: “I am shocked and saddened at the unprovoked attack by Russia, at the wanton destruction of cities and civilian districts and the suffering of Ukrainian citizens.

“I, with the support of my bandmates (Neil, Rob, Tom, Rhys, John, Dionne), wanted to not only raise money for the Ukrainian people but to protest in some way against this WAR.”
