Banbury marks the Horton General’s 150th anniversary

The group enthusiastically sang Happy Birthday to the hospital, with passing motorists tooting their support
A large group of people, some of whom are pictured above, gathered on the Oxford Road in Banbury outside the Horton General on Sunday lunchtime to mark the hospital’s 150th anniversary. Passing motorists waved and tooted their horns in support.
Several rousing renditions of “Happy Birthday to you” were sung with great enthusiasm.
The event was organised by the Keep The Horton General group. Chairman Keith Strangwood said he was pleased with support from drivers and the number of people who had turned up, considering the hot weather conditions.
He said: “There’s got to be people who care about their hospital, not just when they go into hospital, they need to be aware of what’s going on with their hospital inbetween times. If you don’t value it you lose it, which is what we are trying to stop happening.
“With so much happening nationally we have to spread the word locally about what’s going on.”
Elsewhere a number of local businesses and homes and displayed congratulatory messages in their shop windows and the bells at St Mary’s Church in Banbury rang out a peel in honour of the hospital. Through the day Banbury FM broadcast messages from people who wanted to say “thank you” to all the staff, past and present, who have been part of the Horton General Hospital during the last 150 years.
