Banbury plans a jubilee party to cherish and always remember

Events are lined up in the town throughout the four-day bank holiday weekend

Banbury residents are getting ready for the country’s biggest-ever party.  Locals will join millions of people nationwide as the Queen’s platinum jubilee celebrations get underway in the first week in June.

It will be a time to cherish – and people everywhere will always remember where they were and what they did for Her Majesty’s 70th anniversary as monarch.

Townsfolk and revellers across the country will paint their towns red, white and blue – and three great events have been organised in Banbury to recognise the historic occasion.

Party in Spiceball Park on Saturday 4 June will be the main event. From 1pm, there will be something for everyone with all-day live music, fairground-style rides, plus other fab attractions to entertain young and old.

Add a huge choice of food and drink and a happy anniversary is pretty much guaranteed.

The event will continue into the evening with a big-screen TV showing the star-studded happenings in London. Food and drink stalls and the beer tent will stay open so there will be no lack of refreshments.

Queen Elizabeth II became sovereign on 6 February 1952 at the age of 25 following the death of her father King George VI. Her coronation took place on 2 June 1953 at Westminster Abbey in London.

Thursday 2 June this year will get the 70th anniversary celebrations underway – and Banbury will join more than 1500 towns around the country in lighting a late-night beacon to recognise the jubilee.

Food and drink will be available in Spiceball Park from 8pm and the build-up to the beacon-lighting will include live music that will take older people back to the coronation years.

The beacon will be lit at 9.45pm – the time set for all the beacons everywhere to be fired up – and be followed by a firework display.

Banbury’s final jubilee event will be the Big Lunch on Sunday June 5 when 1,000 schoolchildren will come together in the Market Place for eats and drinks.

All the events are free to enter, and the children’s lunches are also free of charge but must be booked before May 27 here.

All three events are organised by Banbury Town Council – and newly-elected mayor Cllr Jayne Strangwood said: “I’m so lucky to start my mayoral year with such a momentous occasion. The Queen’s platinum jubilee isn’t just a once-in-a-lifetime event – it is totally unique.

“A royal platinum jubilee has never happened before and it’s unlikely to ever happen again – and it’s something everyone will want to be part of.

“I’m looking forward to being at all three Banbury events and I’m sure thousands of townspeople will have days they will always remember.”

Further details of all events are on the town council’s Facebook page and Banbury FM’s Events Guide.
