Banbury United player charged with betting misconduct
19/06/2023
Some of the bets were placed during Ben Acquaye’s first season at Station Approach
Banbury United player Ben Acquaye has been charged with betting misconduct. The 23-year-old midfield player has admitted breaching Football Association rules.
The charge relates to 645 bets which were placed on football matches between 22 September 2018 and 19 April 2022. Mr Acquaye joined Banbury on Jun 5, 2021.
Banbury United’s Chairman, Ronnie Johnson, said: “Naturally, we are disappointed with the situation. The bets were historical and none were placed in the 2022-23 season.
“We await details of disciplinary action and the Board continues to provide support to Ben in this FA process as we have throughout the investigation. I have been with Ben through the interviews in order to assist where possible.
“Banbury United communicates all FA policies to players, including those relating to betting, an issue we take very seriously.”
FA rules say that people participating in a game are not permitted to bet, directly or indirectly, on the result or progress of the match. That includes providing information to another person who may then place a bet.
