Banbury United set to light up town for Christmas
16/11/2022
The club’s huge success will be marked as they join the town mayor to start local festivities
The Puritans huge success over the last twelve months will be marked as players and officials from Banbury United turn on the Christmas lights in town this year. The switch-on event will take place on Sunday November 27.
Following the club’s table topping 2021-22 season – and promotion to the National League North – members of the club will join town mayor Jayne Strangwood on stage to press the button and mark the official start to Banbury’s Festivities.
The switch-on, at 5pm, will follow an afternoon of fun with fairground rides, Santa’s grotto and local entertainers performing on stage, including the popular 80s rock covers band Sledgehammer.
A firework display will bring the event to a close.
The town’s new street lights have been specially designed for Banbury. They will shine every day until midnight on January 4th.
The funfair, food stalls and grotto will open at 1pm.
The switch-on, organised by Banbury Town Council, will be the grand finale to a three-day Christmas extravaganza that will include a Victorian market run by Banbury BID.
Cllr Strangwood said: “Banbury’s Christmas street lights are new and spectacular. We think they are the best for miles around.
“Christmas is a season of happiness and goodwill and the new street lights, the market, the entertainment and the switch-on will create a wonderful festive atmosphere.”
She added: “Banbury United were promoted this season to the National League North, the highest grade the club has ever played in, and also broke the club record for undefeated matches with a run of 19 games.
“With ladies and youth teams and off-the-pitch activities, it is a real community organisation.”
