Sean Woodcock has made contact with Banbury’s Muslim community
Banbury’s MP has stood with the Prime Minister in expressing outrage at some of the scenes that have been witnessed around the country this weekend.
Sean Woodcock says he knows our community is appalled by what they have seen and has made contact with Banbury’s Muslim community to reassure them.
Anti-immigration protests turned into violent disorder in UK towns and cities over the weekend.
In an unscheduled broadcast from 10 Downing Street, Prime Minister Keir Starmer told the nation: “I utterly condemn the far-right thuggery we have seen this weekend. Be in no doubt: those who have participated in this violence will face the full force of the law.
“The police will be making arrests. Individuals will be held on remand. Charges will follow. And convictions will follow.
“I guarantee you will regret taking part in this disorder.”
In a statement issued on Sunday evening Mr Woodcock wrote: “I stand with the Prime Minister in expressing my outrage at what we are seeing and condemning it utterly and without equivocation.
“I know that our community is appalled at what we’ve seen on the news in recent days. I have made contact with Banbury’s Muslim community to reassure them that I will do whatever it takes to protect and serve them.”
An emergency Cobra meeting is being held this morning, but speaking to the BBC the shadow home secretary, James Cleverly, suggested that the government could’ve made “key decisions” earlier to address the violent unrest across the UK. Other MPs, including Nigel Farage and Dame Priti Patel are among those to have said parliament should be recalled from its summer recess.
