Professional cyclists and fun riders flock to popular annual event

Over 400 people signed-up for this year’s Broughton Castle Sportive, which took place yesterday (Sunday).   A number of local charities will benefit from the proceeds of the cycling event, which was organised by the Rotary Club of Banbury Cherwell.

Seasoned cyclists set off on the 100-mile route out soon after 6am, with riders on the shorter courses leaving the castle during the morning.   In the intense heat many people named Whichford Hill on the final part of the return to Broughton Castle as a real challenge.

Those taking part ranged from professional cyclists to those who were just enjoying a family fun ride in the sunshine.

Whilst some chose to complete their route competitively, others chose to enjoy the day in a more leisurely manner.   A team of seven from Fine Lady Bakeries started out together, but when the men decided to go ahead Fiona, Donna and Helen chose to make the most of the day out in the sunshine.

Donna said: “We had a lovely stop at Brailes village hall where the volunteers were superb.   They were there with fruit, cakes, coffee and juice.   We stopped for a while!

“The boys went ahead and the girls took our time and had some nice tea and cake and made a jolly nice day of it.”

Those arriving back at Broughton Castle were presented with their medals and then enjoyed refreshments, with most enjoying the shade under the trees.

Organiser Richard Moyle said the hot conditions did provide extra challenges for his team: “Health and safety is always paramount for us.

“Some of these guys are travelling 100 miles and climbing just short of 8,000 feet over the route.   It’s a huge amount of energy and exertion and then with the sun on top it can be dangerous.

“They’re getting a very good briefing from our starter, who’s a cyclist himself.   The key issue is hydration, taking breaks and wearing sunscreen.

“It really is a tough route.   Even though many of these guys are regular and keen cyclists they come back here looking exhausted – but usually with a smile on their face!”
