Bridge fine to drive over – despite stonework collapse

Water damage affected the 16th century structure in Lower Heyford
Vehicle owners are being assured it is fine to continue driving over a bridge, despite part of the structure collapsing last week.
Oxfordshire County Council says its maintenance teams are satisfied there is no need to close the road and no weight limits are required at the 16th century bridge in Lower Heyford.
Water damage caused stonework to fall away from the Heyford Bridge last week.
The bridge, which is a grade II listed structure, carries the B4030 Station Road over the River Cherwell between the A4260 and Lower Heyford.
The Council says that as a precaution temporary safety barriers have been installed to reduce the width of the carriageway. They intend to carry out stonework reconstruction work this summer, at the same time as scheduled repairs to the bridge are undertaken.
