Build and build and build to give young people the opportunity of home ownership

One-in-five of 25-34 year olds are living with their parents

There are an estimated 4,327 25-34 year-olds living with their parents in the Cherwell District – that’s according to Banbury Labour who have analysed Institute for Fiscal Studies research and Office for National Statistics data.

Banbury’s Labour MP says that’s why we need to build more homes and we will “build and build and build”.

Across the country the proportion of young people still living at home has soared by a third since 2006.

Sean Woodcock said: “This is why we need to build more homes.

“The dream of home ownership is out of reach for too many. That must change. One in five of our young people here in Cherwell and in West Oxfordshire are living with their parents. We have to give those people the opportunity to find their own homes – and to do that we have to build more homes.

“That’s why Labour has committed to build 1.5 million new homes. We will build and build and build to create the homes families in Banbury need, whilst boosting jobs, growth and living standards across the country.

“Here in Banbury Constituency, Cherwell District Council and West Oxfordshire District Council must do more to take advantage of this once in a generation opportunity to build the homes we need. District Councillors must recognise that there is a housing crisis in this country, not deny its existence as some in other parties have. Local people need homes to live in.

“After more than a decade of failure Labour was elected to tackle Britain’s housing crisis – and that’s exactly what we are doing. The work of change has begun.”

Last week the government announced it is investing another £350 million to increase the number of affordable and social homes, support homeownership and ease councils housing pressures.
