By-election as three district councillors stand down

26/03/2025

Matt Hodgson, Andrew McHugh and Sean Woodcock are standing down as district councillors

Voting will take place on May 1

Voting will take place to elect three new councillors to Cherwell District Council this May.

The by-elections in two Banbury wards and Deddington follow the resignation of Banbury’s MP Sean Woodcock, who is standing down from his duties as a Labour district councillor in the Banbury Grimsbury & Hightown ward, Conservative Andrew McHugh from who was elected from the Deddington ward, and Labour’s Matt Hodgson, who was elected by voters in Banbury Cross & Neithrop.

District council elections weren’t due to take place this year, but the resignations mean voters in these wards will be asked to choose a new district councillor at the same time as they vote for county councillors.

Those wishing to stand have until next Wednesday at 4pm to submit the relevant paperwork.

Polls will open at 7am on Thursday May 1.   The result of the by-election is unlikely to have any effect on the council’s political control, which is currently under a Liberal Democrat led minority administration.
