Call to improve home energy efficiency in Cherwell district
16/10/2023
A motion will be discussed by councillors ahead of the onset of winter weather
Cherwell District Councillors will this evening discuss a call to improve energy efficiency at homes in the district.
A motion is being presented to the full Council by the Labour group, calling for the authority to take a number of actions on ‘retrofit’ – the retrospective improvement of already existing properties to make them more energy efficient. This would include ensuring that the council’s own houses are properly insulated, whilst working with private and social landlords and seeking more funding for the purpose.
Councillor Sean Woodcock, Leader of the Labour group, is proposing the motion. He said: “Living in cold, damp and poorly insulated homes impacts on people’s health, life chances and on the chances of success in the fight against climate change.
“The Labour Party has committed to a Warm Homes Plan to improve millions of homes across the country, should we win the next election. But there are things that this council can start doing now.
“The cost-of-living is the single biggest issue affecting our residents and with winter upon us, the impact of inefficient properties will soon be felt. That’s why it’s time for Cherwell to act now.”
