Charity extends service to help Banbury children struggling with literacy

Quest for Learning will work with local schools to assist youngsters struggling with their reading skills
A charity which helps children with their literacy skills is coming to Banbury. Thanks to a recent grant award the Quest for Learning team will be extending their service to cover our town, offering youngsters who struggle with their reading skills some extra help.
Quest for Learning has been operating elsewhere in the county since 1996. Their figures show that in just a few weeks the children they work with improve by an average of 13 months in reading accuracy and 20 months in reading comprehension.
The charity employs a team of experienced tutors who work with schools over the course of several months.
The grant will allow Quest for Learning to deliver their programme to around 16 children in two schools in Banbury. They are currently talking to a number of potential school partners.
The tutors will work with small groups of children from January to July during school hours with the schools selecting which children would most benefit from taking part.
Siân Renwick, Executive Director, said: “There are many reasons why a child may be falling behind with their reading. Sometimes they have missed school through illness, sometimes they have a disrupted home life, sometimes English isn’t their first language. Adding Covid lockdowns and missed schooling into that mix has made things really difficult for a lot of children.
“The good news is that we know we can help, and we are very much looking forward to working in Banbury.”
