Cherwell Councillors support Banbury FM’s plans
19/10/2021
Motion to back FM and DAB bid is passed unanimously
Councillors at Cherwell District Council have shown their support for plans to make Banbury FM available to listeners on traditional radios.
At last night’s full Council meeting a motion for the station to be given a licence to broadcast on FM and to be given control of a DAB digital radio multiplex licence was passed unanimously.
The motion was proposed by Councillor Kieron Mallon
Councillor Mallon told Councillors that Banbury and the surrounding area was poorly served by other broadcasters. He said the town had no traditional broadcasters based here and local coverage from those outside the area was minimal.
In seconding the proposal Councillor Tony Illot said: “Why wouldn’t we support this. It is a medium that’s still very popular. This is good for Banbury.”
Councillor Shaida Hussain said: “Not everyone wants to get their news from social media … you want straight facts – quickly. Anything that supports Banburyshire and age friendly Banbury inclusivity I fully support.”
Banbury Town Council has already passed a similar motion to support the plans.
Banbury FM is leading a local not-for-profit group intending to apply to run a DAB digital radio multiplex for our area. Should they be successful other local broadcasters would join Banbury FM on digital radio, including hospital Radio Horton and the football club’s Puritans Radio.
