Cherwell’s cheeky good luck to Three Lions

11/07/2024

“Bring it home, lads – our recycling bins are ready for the confetti!”

Cherwell District Council has joined those wishing the England Football Team good luck, ahead of the Three Lions’ Euro’s final clash against Spain on Sunday.

The public letter starts: “Congratulations on reaching the Euros 2024 final!   You’ve scored your way into the hearts of millions, and we couldn’t be prouder.”

With a tongue-in-cheek wryness the letter continues: “Here in Cherwell, we like to think we know a thing or two about building success and planning for greatness. So, from our council to your squad, here’s a heartfelt (and cheeky) letter of support.”

The Council missive finds similarities between the Council’s work and the team work demonstrated by England to win the trophy: “Much like our own plans to revamp Cherwell’s towns, each strategic pass you make is similar to our regeneration process, where every decision contributes to a more successful future, something our Banbury Vision 2050 and Bicester Market Place teams can tell you all about.”

There’s even a wry dig at how to turn a questionable refereeing decision to your advantage: “If you encounter any rubbish on the field (we’re looking at you, ref), just recycle it into a positive outcome, like that penalty in the semi-final, you struck lucky Kane!”

Here’s the whole letter:

Dear England Football Team,

Congratulations on reaching the Euros 2024 final! You’ve scored your way into the hearts of millions, and we couldn’t be prouder. Here in Cherwell, we like to think we know a thing or two about building success and planning for greatness. So, from our council to your squad, here’s a heartfelt (and cheeky) letter of support.

Just like constructing strong communities, where teamwork is essential, we know you’ll be laying the foundations to win the trophy. Remember, every victory is built goal by goal.

Much like our own plans to revamp Cherwell’s towns, each strategic pass you make is similar to our regeneration process, where every decision contributes to a more successful future, something our Banbury Vision 2050 and Bicester Market Place teams can tell you all about.

If you encounter any rubbish on the field (we’re looking at you, ref), just recycle it into a positive outcome, like that penalty in the semi-final, you struck lucky Kane!

Whether you’re at the Olympiastadion or Wembley, home is where the heart is – all of Cherwell is behind you.

Bring it home, lads – our recycling bins are ready for the confetti!

Yours expectantly,
Cherwell District Council
