Youngsters can sign-up at Banbury Library to join in with science and innovation activities and events

Science and innovation are the focus of a summer challenge for children at Banbury Library and Oxfordshire’s other libraries over the next couple of months.

The Reading Agency is encouraging children to team up with the Gadgeteers, a group of friends who love creating inventions. Youngsters will be able to participate in various activities and events related to science and innovation.

Its free to join in.

In the challenge, by reading books and collecting stickers and other rewards, children can discover how the Gadgeteers use their skills to plan an epic summer party at their local community centre.

Once a youngster has completed the challenge they will receive their very own Gadgeteers certificate and medal and get entered into a countywide prize draw, with prizes including science kits and national book tokens.

Councillor Jenny Hannaby, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services and Safety, said: “This is an exciting opportunity for children to enjoy some great books over the summer period and experience what our libraries across the county have to offer. Reading can have a tremendous impact on a child’s development, and I hope this helps children across the county discover and pursue their love of reading.”

The challenge launched last Saturday and will run until Saturday September 10.

Children can sign up at their nearest library, where they will be given a collector’s poster to keep a record of their reading journey.

A special mini-challenge has been created for the under fours, with their own unique card and stickers.
