Three schools shared in nearly £7,500
Local primary schools have received community food grants from Cherwell District Council to help the children understand more about the food they eat and where it comes from.
In Banbury both St Leonard’s and Dashwood Banbury Academy received cash which has been used to enhance the school curriculum.
At Dashwood Academy the school received £2,500. This was used to update cooking resources, leading to an increased knowledge of fresh ingredients, where they come from and how to use them in healthy and nutritionally balanced meals. The school also used the grant to develop the school garden where the pupils grow produce which goes to support local community groups.
St Leonard’s was awarded £3,000 which was used to create an outside learning space, including an edible garden where pupils grew fruit and vegetables that they then picked and cooked with their families.
Councillor Rob Pattenden, Portfolio Holder for Healthy Communities, said: “It is so brilliant to hear how local primary schools have been able to utilise the grant to cultivate healthier and more sustainable learning environments enriching the learning experience for their pupils.
“Thanks to these grants pupils have been empowered to connect with nature, learn about the importance of nutrition, and develop hands-on skills that will not only benefit them now but for many years to come.”
A further grant of just under £2,000 was awarded to St Mary’s Catholic School in Bicester.
