Council projected overspend grows by £209,000 in one month

The position will be discussed by the Executive tonight
Cherwell District Council is projecting it will have an overspend of £609,000 at the end of this financial year. The amount is £209,000 more than the overspend predicted just a month ago.
The financial state of the authority, which is run by a Liberal Democrat administration, will be considered at a meeting of its Executive Committee tonight.
Major areas causing problems at the end of November included income from property (primarily the shopping centre) being £1.8m (50%) less than had been anticipated.
The council faced increased expenditure on temporary accommodation and supported accommodation claims which weren’t fully grant funded by the Government. There were also large costs for the need to use agency staff in the area of waste and recycling collections.
The overspend would be far higher were it not for a number of departments which achieved large underspends, reducing the council’s overall predicted deficit.
