Council to buy eight one-bedroom Brackley flats to boost affordable housing

Initially four will be used as temporary housing for people at risk of homelessness
West Northamptonshire Council is boosting affordable housing in Brackley by buying eight new one-bedroom flats, which form part of a wider 71-home development near Field View.
The move is intended to help meet growing local demand for one-bedroom homes, particularly to support vulnerable single adults. It will help reduce the council’s reliance on costly emergency accommodation, such as hotels and B&Bs.
Four of the flats will be used as temporary housing for people at risk of homelessness before joining the council’s general stock, while the other four will directly benefit Brackley residents.
Councillor Charlie Hastie said: “By acting swiftly and stepping in when housing association partners weren’t able to proceed, we’ve been able to protect these homes for affordable rent. Without our intervention, they were at risk of being converted to discounted market sale, which would have reduced the amount of genuinely affordable housing available.
“This proactive approach not only safeguards affordable provision in Brackley, but also strengthens our ability to meet the growing housing needs of people across West Northamptonshire. It’s an investment that delivers lasting value – not just in financial terms, but in the stability and support it provides to local people.”
The £1.36 million purchase is funded by a mix of government grants and developer contributions, with the homes expected to be ready within the next eighteen months.
