Decision time over new housing between Banbury and Hanwell
10/08/2023
The application has received 489 objections with just 2 in favour
Its crunch time this evening for campaigners who’ve been battling against plans to build in the remaining fields between Banbury and Hanwell. Cherwell District Council’s Planning Committee is set to decide whether an outline planning application for 170 houses by the Vistry Group will be accepted or rejected.
The Council’s officers are recommending the plans are thrown out.
The Vistry Group says there is a growing need for high-quality homes across the country, with the wider Cherwell district seeing a particular demand. Of the 170 new homes they are proposing, 51 would be designated as mixed-tenure affordable housing.
But the proposal has received little support, with 489 notes of objection submitted. Just two were received in favour.
Banbury Town Council and Parish Councils local to the site are all noted as objecting.
A report to Councillors recommends they reject the application on the grounds it is outside the natural settlement area and could lead to Hanwell being joined to Banbury. It also notes the proposal as being harmful to the character and appearance of the open countryside.
The Planning Committee meeting starts at 4pm at Cherwell’s HQ, Bodicote House.
