Declutter for charity with new doorstep service
09/10/2024
Good condition clothing, shoes, books, CDs, DVDs and children’s toys will be accepted
A new scheme will give people in the Cherwell district the opportunity to declutter their homes whilst giving back to charity, without even leaving the house.
Cherwell District Council has teamed up with Anglo Doorstep Collections to give a second lease of life to hard-to-recycle items such as clothing, shoes, books, CDs, DVDs and children’s toys. As long as the items are in good condition they can be donated to Anglo, who operate free doorstep collections.
All the items will be reused for their original purpose and will help to raise money for local mental health charity Oxfordshire Mind.
The service will be run separately from the council’s normal kerbside waste and recycling collections. Those wishing to take advantage of the Anglo scheme should book a slot and then bag or box up the items and leave them out on the selected collection day.
Councillor Ian Middleton, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services, said: “Items like clothing and footwear can be difficult to recycle at home due to the mixture and type of materials used to produce them.
“Each year, an estimated £140 million worth of clothing is sent to landfill, and a quick and easy way to reduce this is to give items a second life. This is a green and sustainable way of disposing of your unwanted items whilst giving someone else the chance to love them as much as you did.”
Councillor Dr Chukwudi Okeke, Chairman of the Council, said: “We’re really pleased to be working with Anglo Doorstep Collections to give residents the opportunity to easily re-home unwanted items for free whilst also raising money for a worthy cause.
“Oxfordshire Mind is my nominated charity for this year, and I am pleased we are able to support an organisation that helps people prioritise their mental wellbeing and seek help without fear or hesitation.”
