Extra spending on road repairs welcomed
29/10/2024
An announcement will be made in the tomorrow’s Budget
Ahead of tomorrow’s Budget the pre-announcement of an extra £500m of funding to help councils fix local roads has been welcomed by Banbury’s MP and the Leader of the Labour Group at Cherwell District Council.
Its understood that Chancellor Rachel Reeves will lift the total amount allocated for mending highways in England to £1.6 billion. The investment is understood to be nearly 50 percent more than road-fixing promises made by the previous government for this financial year.
MP Sean Woodcock said: “Potholes are a blight on Banbury and a huge inconvenience for motorists. After 14 years of Tory rule our country is showing real signs of decay, but Labour was elected to fix the foundations of our country and our economy and that is exactly what we will do.
“Wednesday’s budget will be a huge moment in getting Britain back on track. Labour will stabilise our economy, protect working people, and take forward the work of resuscitating our public services – especially our NHS.”
Councillor Amanda Watkins added: “Potholes are constantly raised on the doorstep and by residents across Cherwell. I’m delighted that the new government has announced this investment in local roads, and I look forward to seeing the benefits of this in the coming years.”
