Fairport’s Gerry leaves for new adventures
13/09/2022
75-year-old drummer isn’t retiring yet
After 24 years Fairport Convention have said goodbye to their drummer. Gerry Conway has left the band but pointed out he isn’t retiring.
Gerry said: “I never expected to still be playing at 75, my Mum was always asking me when I’d retire!
“Well, I’m not retiring but looking forward to some new adventures.
“Thanks Fairport, we had some great times.”
Before his time with Fairport Gerry performed with the backing band for Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) in the 1970s and then Jethro Tull during the 1980s. He became a member of Fairport Convention in 1998.
Gerry appeared with the rest of Fairport just a month ago for the first festival since the pandemic. The band say they will now undertake their October tour performing as a 4 piece.
