“The number of young men with dangerous dogs in this country is out of control”

Two dogs have been seized by police after they fatally attacked a small Cavapoo in Banbury Town Centre, just feet away from a 5-month old baby in a pram.

The Cavapoo, called Coco, was being walked by owners Eddie and Ayesha Reeves with their child in West Bar Street at the time.

Eddie, who is a local councillor at Cherwell District Council, said they have been left traumatised by the experience.

The attack happened on Good Friday morning (April 3).

Eddie said: “It happened in an instant.   There was blood all over me and our baby.”

Luckily neither Eddie, his wife or baby were bitten, but Coco didn’t survive being mauled by the other dogs.

“The number of young men with dangerous dogs in this country is out of control,” said Eddie.   “The dogs need to be put down. Apparently, that isn’t automatic and that the dogs need to be ‘assessed’ before a decision is taken as to whether to muzzle them or not. The law needs to change.”

In the wake of the attack Eddie is calling for his fellow councillors at Cherwell District Council to come together to consider what action needs to be taken to protect communities against dangerous dogs.   He said: “I am keen to hear from other victims of dog attacks.   I am calling a Special Council Meeting at Cherwell District Council before the May elections to discuss certain legal reforms that need, in my view, to occur.

“I am especially keen that members of the public be invited to speak at that meeting and that any such meeting be more about other victims than us.”

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson told Banbury FM: “At around 9.15am [on Friday April 3] , we were called to a dangerous dog incident in West Bar Street, Banbury.

“Two dogs attacked a Cavapoo dog who was being walked. The Cavapoo dog sadly died from its injuries.

“An investigation has since been launched and both other dogs have been seized. Anyone with information about this attack is asked to call 101 or make an online report via our website, quoting reference number 43260161850.”
