Free electric blanket safety checks
14/09/2022
20% of electric blankets fail safety checks
Anyone who uses an electric blanket is being encouraged to take advantage of free safety checks that are running in our area next Wednesday (September 21). The checks are being provided by Oxfordshire County Council’s trading standards team.
Electric blanket testing has taken place in Oxfordshire for over 20 years, but the failure rate remains at over 20 per cent. A faulty electric blanket can lead to house fires.
Those wishing to take advantage of the checks can call 01865 895999 (option 3), or email duty.officer@oxfordshire.gov.uk. Pre-booked appointments are required, but for those not able to travel arrangements can be made to collect electric blankets between October 3-7.
Councillor Jenny Hannaby, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services and Safety, said: “If the condition of a blanket is allowed to deteriorate there is the possibility it could become faulty, risking injury and fire. We want to ensure that electric blankets are still safe for use.”
