Weather stations and sensors enable the team to jump into action as soon as the temperature drops

Drivers in Northamptonshire will be pleased to know that the county’s gritting team are on standby and fully stocked ahead of the colder weather this winter.

Three depots in Brixworth, Towcester and Wellingborough have tonnes of salt ready to grit when the temperatures drop.

The 20 strong gritting team provide their service to both West Northamptonshire and North Northamptonshire Councils.

Northamptonshire Highways is using enhanced technology in their gritter trucks which provides route data and feeds back to the snow desk to ensure gritters are on route and safe.

Cllr Phil Larratt, West Northamptonshire Council’s Cabinet Member for environment, transport, highways and waste, said: “Our aim is to make Northamptonshire’s roads as safe as possible, to ensure people can travel with a minimum of delay and disruption, whatever the weather throws at us this winter.”

The state of the county’s roads will be measured through a number of weather stations and sensors which feed temperature readings every 15 minutes and weather forecasts every hour to the central team.

Individual roads from the precautionary network will be gritted when forecasts predict the weather will drop below 0.5degC for that area.

1,500 grit bins have already been filled for use on public roads and footpaths.
