Group to mark hospital anniversary on Sunday lunchtime
15/07/2022
Keep The Horton General Chairman: “We want to see the Horton lasting another 150 years”
Around the area people are gearing up to mark Sunday’s 150th anniversary of the Horton General Hospital first opening. Amongst them are members of Keep The Horton General, who fight to ensure the hospital and its services remain in Banbury.
The group will be meeting outside the Horton’s main entrance on the Oxford Road from midday and handing our special birthday balloons. People are welcome to join them to celebrate the anniversary.
Keep The Horton General was formed after plans to close the hospital were announced in 2005. Those plans were shelved in 2008 but the fight to retain services locally has continued.
The group’s Chairman, Keith Strangwood said: “We want to see the Horton lasting another 150 years.
“We may have lost obstetrics and we may have lost emergency surgery, but we’ve managed to hang on to paediatrics and A&E. We’re hoping to get some of these services back.
“We’ve now got the ability to do chemotherapy at the Horton which is something we didn’t have for a long time, which stops that awful journey to Oxford to go to the Churchill.”
Other celebrations include displays saying thank you to the Horton in local shops, a peel of church bells and messages from members of the community on Banbury FM.
